The course “New Sailors” is for those who want to learn how to sail. You do not need any previous sailing experience or to have passed the theoretical exam.
What You Get
With the “New Sailors” course, you gain a solid foundation for feeling confident and safe on the water. The course is ideal if you are considering buying a boat or want to become a more competent and reliable crew member.
The instruction consists of approximately 18 modules of 3 hours each – a total of about 54 hours. We normally sail on weekday evenings from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
We are a certified sailing school under Dansk Sejlunion and teach according to their guidelines for Diploma Sailing Schools.
With the “New Sailors” course, you will learn to:
- Tie a reef knot, figure-eight knot, double half hitch, and bowline
- Hoist and lower the sails
- Handle the jib during tacking
- Assist with mooring under supervision
You will also know:
- How to act in a “man overboard” situation
- How to make a visual distress signal
And you will become familiar with:
- The crew’s roles on board
- Basic sailing terminology
- Basic maritime navigation rules
What You Need
You must obtain a CE-approved life jacket. You may also consider purchasing good rain gear or sailing clothing. See the image below for our recommendations on what to bring in your sailing bag.
Certificate of Competence (Duelighedsbevis)
With the “New Sailors” course, you have the opportunity to take the practical test for the Danish Maritime Authority’s Certificate of Competence (Duelighedsbevis). This test is conducted in the club’s boats and is paid for separately.
The theoretical part of the Certificate of Competence is not included in the course.
The Club’s Boats and Sailing Activities
The Sailing School at Sejlklubben Neptun Vejle has three Albin Express yachts. We sail one evening per week, with each boat crewed by one instructor and three students. You can choose to sail on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Team Composition
When registering, we would like to know which days you are available to sail. We will then form the teams accordingly. If you have special requests regarding team composition, please let us know as soon as possible.
If some participants only speak English, we will try to place them on the same team.
Start of the Season
The course begins with an introductory evening on March 12 at 7:00 PM. You will receive more information by email once the teams have been formed. Here, you will learn how the Sailing School will help you become a competent sailor.
Part of the course involves getting to know the boat and equipment. An important part of this is helping prepare the boats for the spring season.
Price
The “New Sailors” course costs DKK 3,600 including membership of the sailing club (B-member).
The price includes teaching materials. Please note that the membership fee is lower during the first year.
If you wish to take the practical exam, this costs approximately DKK 300.
